AUXILIARY VERBS & THEIR USAGE :--  


There are 24 auxiliary verbs in English grammar. They are also called Anomalous Finites. 

Auxiliary verbs are of two categories.:: Primary and Modal. Total number of Primary Auxiliary 

verbs are 11...whereas  remaining 13 verbs are called Modals. 



The Primary Auxiliary verbs are:: 

Be: am, is, are, was, we're

Do: do, does, did

Have: have, has, had



 Modals are:: shall, will, should, would, can, could, may, might, must, need, dare, used to, ought to. 


Usage of Primary Auxiliary:


 Am/is/are-- these are used in present tense. 


Do/does  used in  present tense (does-used in 3rd person singular number) 



Did-- used in past tense. 


Has/Have-- used in present perfect tense. 


Had-- used in past perfect tense. 




Examples Solved (Primary Auxiliary) ::

 I am a student. 

what is your name? 

What are you doing ?

 Do you like tea? 

 Does he work hard? 

Did he do his works?


 USAGE OF MODAL AUXILIARIES:::
 

SHALL:: threaten, future etc


Ex: You shall be punished.(threaten)

     We shall go to Delhi. (future)



Will:: certainty, future, politeness etc.

Ex: I will do it positively(certainty)

     They will help us.(future)

    Will you please do this?(politeness)


Should: duty, obligation, probability etc. 

Ex : You should work hard (duty)

     We should obey our parents (obligation)

     They should come soon (Probability)


Would: future, politeness.

Ex: He said that he would come soon (future)

    Would you please help us/(politeness)


Can: ability, permission

Ex:   I can do it easily (ability)

    Can you give me the bike?(permission)


Could: permission, politeness, ability & past of can

Ex: Could I open the door?(permission)

     Could you please help me? (politeness)

     I could climb up the tree.(ability)
  
  You could come yesterday (past of can)


May: possibility, permission and purpose. 

Ex: He may arrive soon (Possibility) 

   May I come in Sir?) permission) 

   We eat that may live. (purpose) 


Might: past of May

Ex:  He might have helped the oldan yesterday.


Must: Compulsion, obligation and duty. 

Ex: You must repay your debt. (Compulsion) 

  We must love our country. (Obligation) 

  One must be truthful to one's parents.(duty) 


Need: regular use.. 

Ex: I need your help. (Regular) 

  You need to go there. (Auxiliary) 



Dare: Courage, brave

Ex:  I dare walking barefoot.(courage) 

 I dare challenge you. ( brave) 


Used to: this is an important auxiliary verb. Students often mistake using ' use to'. This is wrong. 

They should use as 'used to'. It indicates past habit

Ex:: Gandhiji used to walk early in the morning while in South Africa..
